They will be able to determine the soil characteristics through hands-on activities and experiment with them in the classroom. Campers will discover why soil is the backbone of forest ecosystems.

Campers will perform hands-on activities to find insects that are common in our ecosystem, learn their different parts, how they live in their environment and why they are important. Campers will then use microscopes to examine their specimens closer while comparing them with other insects and adding to our collection.

Take advantage of the elevation and clear skies by looking through our new Dobsonian telescope and using our planispheres. View galaxies and stars and find constellations. Visitors of all ages will enjoy this new session.

Some of the more popular things to do include swimming, fishing, archery and logger sports. We also have canoes and lessons are provided for those wishing to learn. Children can also challenge the obstacle course set up throughout the camp and play on the aerial zip line.

Campers will be introduced to pond insects in our area. They will be able to catch insects and other creepy crawlers and watch them close up in the aquarium during their week of camp.

Campers learn safe fire-building techniques, camp setup and equipment use, and then enjoy a night sleeping in tents. Camp Councilors/Leaders accompany the campers on all hikes and supervise overnight camp outs. A great introduction to learning how to enjoy the great outdoors.

Campers will have the opportunity to construct masterpieces made from materials provided; these are taken home as a memento of their Silver Lake Summer Camp Experience!

Many displays reflect advances in logging, starting with double bitted axes to crosscut saw displays. Pickeroons to Osborn fire finders and chain saws that require two people to operate. In the outdoor portion of our Museum you will see a steam donkey engine, logging arches and an assortment of other retired machinery that’s considered antique by today’s standards.
